Disclaimer: Students can use AI to amplify their strengths and streamline their efforts, but they should never let it replace their own authentic voice, critical thinking, or personal growth. The key with using AI is to maintain agency in the process. Students should remember that the career development process is about more than just landing a job. It's about understanding yourself, developing professional skills, and building meaningful relationships. AI can support these goals, but it cannot achieve them for you. Approach these tools with curiosity, intentionality, and a commitment to your own development, and they will serve you well throughout your career journey. The ethical questions surrounding AI—such as its environmental impact, potential for bias, data privacy, and effects on employment—are complex and evolving. Rather than avoiding AI entirely or using it uncritically, we encourage informed, thoughtful engagement. By understanding both the benefits and challenges, students can use AI responsibly while advocating for its continued improvement (Adapted from UCI's Career Center). Please note that UCR Career Center is not affiliated with AI tools apart from "Gemini" and "Quinncia" when signing in with your R'Mail account. Use your discretion when sharing your personal information with AI tools as UCR ITS only has a data privacy agreement with "Gemini" and "Quinncia".
What are AI tools, like ChatGPT?
AI chatbots are trained to simulate human-like conversation using advanced natural language processing techniques. One example is ChatGPT, an AI chatbot built on the Generative Pretrained Transformer (GPT) language model. ChatGPT can process human language prompts from users and generate human-like conversation responses.
Can AI assist in the job search process?
AI tools like ChatGPT and other generative AI can provide valuable assistance in the job search when used ethically. For example, AI can help in drafting application materials, refining resume, or even simulating interview questions. However, it should not be solely relied on for the entire job search process. Use AI tools as a supplemental aid while ensuring that your unique personality and aspirations shine through in applications and interviews.
While AI offers insights and assistance, it cannot replicate career counseling. Take advantage of Career Center services for career guidance. Our experienced career specialists can understand your unique needs and provide personalized guidance for your career goals.

- Reflect on what you learn through AI interactions
- Identify when AI is helping you develop skills vs doing the work for you

How to start using AI?
The best way to learn about the AI tools is to try them yourself by creating an account with AI chatbots such as Google Gemini (sign in with your R'Mail), ChatGPT, Claude AI or Pi AI. Please read their terms and conditions. Do your own research on their capabilities and limitations. UCR's ITS provides more information about some of the approved AI tools here.
